Abstract

Many people experience psychological distress and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after a potentially traumatic event, but only a minority develops chronic PTSD. When trauma victims restrict their routine and systemically avoid reminders of the incident, symptoms of PTSD are more likely to become chronic. Many studies have shown that
cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is effective in the management of patients with PTSD. This article overviews the cognitive behavioral models of PTSDand the general principles of CBT for PTSD. In addition, we describe the components that comprise CBT for PTSD and the application of CBT in clinical situation. Finally, we introduce prolonged exposure (PE)
therapy, which is specific form of exposure therapy and recently several studies have shown to be exceedingly effective for the treatment of PTSD, and discuss the future directions.
